Tree of the Year

The Icelandic Forestry Association nominates a Tree of the Year each year. The nomination is intended to highlight the good work done in Iceland in the cultivation of trees and forests. The nomination can be based on a variety of factors, such as the size, history or rarity of the tree species in question.

The trees that have been nominated thus far are:

1989 Birch (Betula pubescens) in Vaglaskógur in the north of Iceland.
1993 A group of birches (Betula pubescens) in Fljótsdalur in the east of Iceland.
1994 Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) on Suðurgata in Reykjavík.
1995 Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) at Ferstikla in Hvalfjörður in the west of Iceland.
1996 European larch (Larix decidua) in Skrúður in Dýrafjörður, in the Westfjords of Iceland.
1997 A pair of larches, probably russian larch (Larix sukaczewii) at Aðalstræti 52 in Akureyri in the north of Iceland.
1998 Birch (Betula pubescens) at Sniðgata in Akureyri in the north of Iceland.
1999 Wych elm (Ulmus glabra) at Túngata 6 in Reykjavík.
2000 Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) at Sólheimar in Bíldudalur in the Westfjords of Iceland.
2001 Tea-leaved willow (Salix phylicifolia ‘Strandir’), at Tröllatunga in Arnkötludalur in the Westfjords of Iceland.
2002 A pair of spruces, at Stóra-Giljá in A-Húnavatnssýsla in the north of Iceland.
2003 Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) at Brattahlíð 4, in Hveragerði in the south of Iceland.
2004 European larch (Larix decidua) on Hafnargata in Seyðisfjörður, E-Iceland.
2005 Russian larch (Larix sukaczewii), by Digranesvegur in the eastern part of Kópavogur, SE-Iceland.
2006 Gray poplar (Populus x canescens) at Austurgata 12, Hafnarfjörður, in SE-Iceland.
2007 Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica) at Mörkin in Hallormsstaður, in the east of Iceland.
2008 Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Purpureum’) at Borgarbraut 27, in Borgarnes in the west of Iceland.
2009 Silver birch (Betula pendula) in Kjarnaskógur, just outside Akureyri in N-Iceland.
2010 Wych elm (Ulmus glabra) at Heiðarvegur 35 in Vestmannaeyjabær.
2011 Scotch laburnum (Laburnum alpinum) at Engjateigur 9 in Reykjanesbær in SW-Iceland.
2012 Grey poplar (Populus x canescens) at Brekkugata 8 in Akureyri in N-Iceland.
2013 Black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa) at Freyshólar in Fljótsdalur in the east of Iceland.
2014 European larch (Larix decidua) at Arnarholt in Stafholtstungur in the west of Iceland.
2015 Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) at Sandfell in Öræfi in the south of Iceland.
